Sergey Starostin & Volkovtrio – "Once There Was Sun" (2000)
"Once There Was Sun" is a one‑of‑a‑kind project that fuses authentic Russian folklore, jazz improvisation, and contemporary electronic soundscapes. The album features live performances by Sergey Starostin (vocals, flutes, clarinet) and Volkovtrio — Vladimir Volkov (double bass, viola da gamba, gusli, electric bass) with Slava Kurashov (guitar, gusli, percussion).
Vlad Zhukov was involved in multiple capacities: he recorded material, handled programming and sampling, played keyboards, and also served as one of the producers of the album. His electronic textures and production approach complement the ethnic and experimental palette of the record.
Released in 2000 on Green Wave Records, the album received critical acclaim. In 2003, a track from this album was nominated for a BBC World Music Award — one of the first international recognitions for the entire team.
